Humidity control

for swimming pools and spa centres

Technical context

Technical solutions for indoor pools, steam rooms and spas

Indoor pools continuously generate water vapour through evaporation from the pool surface. Without a correctly sized system, humidity can cause condensation on glazing and metal components, damage to finishes and higher energy consumption.

Steam rooms and hammams operate close to saturation and need steam systems configured according to the volume of the room, the required temperature and the heat losses.

In fitness, reception and relaxation areas, the microclimate is set according to temperature, ventilation and occupancy.

Texco supplies dehumidifiers for indoor pools and steam systems for steam rooms and hammams. For fitness rooms, receptions and relaxation areas separate from the pool hall, the need for humidification or evaporative cooling is determined after assessing the existing conditions and the HVAC installation.

Technical specifications

What matters technically for swimming pools and spa centres

Swimming pools and spa centres operate with constantly high humidity. Air control determines user comfort, energy consumption and the service life of the building.
  • Humidity in the pool hall

For most indoor pools, a range of 50 to 60% RH limits excessive evaporation and reduces the risk of condensation. The target value is set according to the water temperature, the air temperature, the level of use and the characteristics of the building.

  • Dew point and the risk of condensation

Condensation occurs when the temperature of a surface drops below the dew point of the room air. Preventing it involves dehumidification, adequate insulation, limiting thermal bridges and directing air towards glazing and other cold surfaces.

  • Heat recovery

Heat pump dehumidifiers recover energy from the humid air and return it to the room air. Depending on the model and configuration, the heat can also be used to heat the pool water.

  • Steam generation for steam rooms and hammams

Steam rooms and hammams operate close to saturation. The system is sized according to the volume of the room, the required temperature, the insulation, the glazed surfaces, the ventilation and how often the door is opened. Condensation is normal in this type of space and must be managed through finishes, floor falls, drainage and correct steam distribution.

  • Hygiene of humidification systems

Generating steam by boiling offers a hygienic solution, but correct operation also depends on steam distribution, condensate drainage and maintenance of the installation. Adiabatic systems require water treatment and sanitisation procedures suited to the equipment.

  • Humidity in fitness and relaxation areas

In fitness rooms, receptions and relaxation areas, 40 to 60% RH can be used as an indicative range for comfort. The target value is set together with the temperature, the ventilation and the occupancy.

  • Evaporation load and system sizing

The dehumidification capacity is calculated from the water surface area, the water and air temperatures, the degree of water agitation, the number of users, the fresh air supply, the operating schedule and whether a pool cover is used. The pool surface area is only one of the sizing parameters.

  • Protecting the building and the finishes

High humidity and condensation can affect the joinery, the metal components, the structure and the finishes. Humidity control and directing air towards cold surfaces help limit condensation and protect the building.
Managing chloramines depends on the water treatment, the fresh air supply, the extraction of contaminated air and the correct distribution of air in the pool area.

Methodology

How Texco works

Every configuration starts from the actual conditions inside the space – water, air, volume and pattern of use. Wet areas and steam rooms are assessed separately, because they involve distinct requirements.
  • Technical analysis

Texco analyses the water surface area and temperature, the air temperature and humidity, the volume of the room, the number of users, the operating regime, the ventilation, whether a pool cover is used, the level of thermal insulation, the glazed surfaces and the risk of condensation forming. Steam rooms and fitness areas are assessed separately, because they have different requirements.

  • Sizing

The dehumidifier capacity is calculated from the evaporation load, the fresh air supply and the operating conditions. For steam rooms, the calculation takes into account the volume, the required temperature, the insulation, the glazed surfaces, the ventilation, the heat losses and how often the door is opened.

  • Installation and commissioning

The equipment is installed directly in the room, behind the wall, under the ceiling or integrated into ductwork, depending on the model. Commissioning includes setting the parameters, checking the air or steam distribution and testing the condensate drainage.
For compatible equipment, Texco configures the available interface and supplies the necessary technical information, and integration into the BMS is carried out together with the automation specialist.

  • Technical documentation

Texco supplies the data sheets, the operating parameters, the installation drawings and the maintenance instructions available for the equipment included in the project.

Frequently asked questions

  • What humidity level is recommended in an indoor pool?

Generally between 50 and 60% RH. The exact value depends on the water and air temperatures, how the pool is used and the characteristics of the building.

  • According to the water surface area, the temperatures, the number of users, the degree of water agitation, the ventilation, the operating schedule and whether a pool cover is used.

  • Yes, on the models and configurations that include this function. Other versions return the heat to the room air only.

  • According to the volume of the room, the required temperature, the insulation, the glazed surfaces, the ventilation, the heat losses and how often the door is opened.

  • Yes. At humidity close to saturation, condensation is normal and must be managed through resistant finishes, floor falls, drainage and correct steam distribution.

  • Yes, if the equipment and the selected options support the protocols used in the building.
