Upholstered furniture

Automated cutting, adhesive application and humidity control

for upholstered furniture production

Technical context

What upholstered furniture production involves technically

The production of sofas, armchairs, chairs and other upholstered pieces starts with designing the parts and preparing the data for production. The workflow continues with feeding and cutting the fabric or leather, sewing, adhesive application, assembly and finishing of the components.

Cutting accuracy, efficient material use, even adhesive application and finishing quality influence how the parts fit together and how the finished product looks.

Requirements are set according to the materials processed, the adhesive system, the product construction and the production rate.

Texco supplies CAD software, automated feeding and cutting systems, equipment for adhesive application and component finishing, steam generators and humidity control solutions.

Technical specifications

What matters technically in upholstered furniture production

Upholstered furniture production combines materials, adhesives and operations with different technical requirements. Parameters are set for each stage, not for the line as a whole.
  • Part design and data preparation for production

CAD files must be prepared according to the materials and equipment used. What matters is correct part definition, orientation on the material, placement rules and data transfer to the cutting system.
Compatibility with other applications or with ERP systems is checked according to the available formats and the software configuration used.

  • Material yield in cutting

Pattern nesting directly influences fabric and leather consumption. CAD software and nesting functions position the parts on the available surface, reducing waste and the time needed to prepare cutting.

  • Cutting accuracy

Before cutting, roll materials must be fed and spread without tension that would change their dimensions after cutting. The system configuration is set according to the material, thickness, number of plies, part shape and production rate.
Accuracy and repeatability depend on the cutter, the cutting tool, the vacuum system, the feeding method and the parameters configured for the materials processed.

  • Quality and evenness of adhesive application

Bonding quality depends on the adhesive type, viscosity, flow rate, pressure, nozzle and evenness of the applied layer. Manual systems offer flexibility for varied operations, while automatic ones provide repeatability in series production.

  • Component finishing and steam requirement

After assembly, some upholstered components need manual steam finishing to remove creases, shine and marks left on surfaces covered with fabric or leather.
The finishing equipment is chosen according to the material, the component shape and the intended result. The steam requirement is calculated separately, in kg per hour, based on the consumption of the connected equipment, the required pressure and the degree of simultaneous use.

  • Humidity in the production hall

Fabrics, leather and adhesive systems react differently to microclimate variations. Overly dry air can encourage static electricity and variations in material behaviour, while high humidity can affect certain types of adhesive and storage conditions. The target value is set according to the material, adhesive, temperature and process.

  • Energy efficiency of the machinery

Energy consumption is assessed according to the technology and operating regime of each machine. For gas-fired generators, combustion efficiency and heat recovery matter, while for electrical equipment what matters is installed power, consumption relative to capacity and actual running time.

Methodology

How Texco works in upholstered furniture production

Every project starts from the actual products and the workflow on the production floor. Cutting, steam and microclimate systems are sized separately, because they depend on different parameters.
  • Technical analysis

Design and cutting. Texco assesses on site the product types, the materials used, the part dimensions, the production volumes, the feeding method and the existing preparation and cutting operations.

Adhesive application. The adhesive’s technical and safety data sheets, viscosity, flow rate, application type, line speed and intended result are checked.

Component finishing. The materials, component shapes, defects to be corrected and the way finishing fits into the final production stage are analysed.

Steam generation. The consuming equipment, average and peak flow, pressure, degree of simultaneous use, water quality and energy source are checked.

Microclimate control. Texco analyses the space, the air changes, the existing temperature and humidity, the target values, the operating regime and the zones that need separate control.

  • Sizing and choosing the configuration

Design and cutting. The software, feeding system and cutter are chosen according to the material, number of plies, part size, production volume and required accuracy.

Adhesive application. It is decided whether application will be manual or automatic, and the equipment for feeding, dosing and spraying is selected.

Component finishing. The equipment is chosen according to the material, part geometry, work rate and intended visual result.

Steam generation. The generator is sized separately, according to the consumption and pressure required by the finishing equipment.

Microclimate control. The system capacity, the humidification or dehumidification technology, and the distribution and positioning of the equipment are determined.

  • Installation, configuration and commissioning

Design and cutting. The software and equipment are configured and tested on files, materials and parts representative of production.

Adhesive application. The system is adjusted and tested with the adhesive and materials used in the process. The final parameters are set according to the result obtained.

Finishing and steam generation. The equipment supply, steam pressure and result obtained on representative components are checked.

Microclimate control. The system parameters are adjusted and humidity distribution in the zones served is checked.

  • Technical documentation and support

Texco supplies the data sheets, operating manuals, operating parameters and maintenance instructions available for the equipment delivered. Operator training is included when it is part of the project.

For humidification and dehumidification equipment, Texco checks the communication options and supplies the technical information available. Integration into the BMS or SCADA is carried out by the automation system integrator.

Frequently asked questions

  • Which materials can be cut automatically for upholstered furniture?

Woven and non-woven fabrics, quilted materials, leather and other flexible materials, depending on the cutter configuration and the tools fitted.

  • A single-ply cutter is used for leather, short runs, customised products and individually cut parts. A high-ply cutter is used for stacked fabrics and series production.

  • The capacity is calculated in kg of steam per hour, based on equipment consumption, the required pressure and the degree of simultaneous use.

  • Manual spraying offers flexibility for different parts and touch-ups. Automatic systems provide repeatability and better control of consumption in series production.

  • Yes, in separate or independently controlled zones. In an open space, the systems must be designed so that they do not work against each other.

  • CAD software enables pattern design, part nesting and data transfer to the cutting system. Compatibility depends on the formats and configuration used.
